HERA Innovation Centre

The HERA Foundation's ambition extended far beyond creating a new research and training facility. The vision was to develop a building that would embody the organisation's leadership in innovation, demonstrate the future of sustainable construction, and become a catalyst for change across New Zealand's heavy engineering, manufacturing, and construction sectors.

Wanting to demonstrate worlds leadership, sustainability was embedded as a core project driver. Targeting the highest level of New Zealand Green Building Council certification through a 6 Green Star Design & As Built rating. The project also became the first building in the world to be assessed using the Planetary Accounting framework, measuring its environmental performance against the Earth's ecological limits rather than conventional benchmarks. This commitment challenged the project team to think differently, ensuring every design decision contributed to a building that reflects HERA's purpose and values.

Our role was to help transform that ambition into an achievable and buildable outcome. Working alongside HERA and the wider consultant team, we guided the integration of Green Star principles throughout the project, balancing sustainability aspirations with practical delivery, long-term value, and commercial outcomes. This included refining the design to support certification requirements, identifying value engineering opportunities that protected the project's sustainability objectives, coordinating the consultant team, supporting procurement, and providing architectural services throughout construction to ensure the vision was realised.

The completed Innovation Centre showcases how thoughtful architectural leadership can create measurable value. Responsibly sourced steel forms the primary structure and architectural expression, while initiatives including rooftop solar photovoltaic panels, rainwater harvesting, minimising environmental impacts through permeable detention paving, low-emission transport infrastructure, responsible material selection, life cycle assessment, and a strong focus on occupant wellbeing all contribute to the building's exceptional environmental performance. Together, these initiatives demonstrate that sustainability is achieved through the integration of many carefully considered decisions rather than a single design feature.

The HERA Innovation Centre provides an inspiring environment for research, collaboration, and industry training while standing as a tangible expression of HERA's vision. It demonstrates what is possible when sustainability is considered early in a project and carried through every decision to completion, providing HERA with a facility that reflects its leadership and inspires the future of New Zealand's engineering and construction industry.
